The Patek Philippe Museum, considered to be one of the world's most extensive horological exhibits, has recently seen its 100,000th visitor pass through its doors. Opened in November of 2001, the museum has proven to be a powerful attraction for watch enthusiasts and the general public alike, who have been able to enjoy a nearly unsurpassed range of exhibits that span more than five centuries of European watchmaking, and highlight numerous important Patek Philippe timepieces from the company's founding in 1839 to the present day.
"By opening this museum we wished to create a real Mecca of watchmaking in Geneva, where researchers, aesthetes, scientists, technicians and simple enthusiasts could gather to admire some of the watchmaking treasures that have left their mark on our history," commented Philippe Stern, the president of Patek Philippe. "We also hoped to attract the general public, from Geneva and elsewhere, to share with it our passion for luxury watchmaking. By reaching the 100,000 mark in terms of visitor numbers, we feel we have successfully risen to the challenge!"
Located on Rue des Vieux-Grenadiers 7 in Geneva, the Patek Philippe Museum features four floors of exhibits, each of which allows visitors to experience different aspects of watchmaking history and accomplishments. In addition to the wondrous range of irreplaceable watchmaking treasures, the museum's ground floor reproduces a classical watchmaking atelier complete with over 400 tools and machines, while the top floor presents a vast library of more than 8,000 works devoted to the art and science of time measurement. Flat-screen televisions augment various sections of the exhibits, playing elegantly produced films that provide helpful and visually alluring supplementary information.
