Harry Winston, the famous watch and jewelry brand, has partnered with the non-profit Time Aeon Foundation in Switzerland to create a new horological competition entitled the Pleiad Project. Intended to bring outstanding undiscovered watchmaking talent to the forefront, the Pleiad Project will draw together independent watchmaking greats Philippe Dufour, Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey (of Greubel Forsey fame), Vianney Halter and Kari Voutilainen. The submission deadline is February 28th, 2009 with the winner being announced in the summer of 2009.
Once the Pleiad Project winner is selected by an international jury, he or she will be able to develop their timepiece with the assistance of the five celebrated Time Aeon Foundation watchmakers. Harry Winston has agreed to provide the Project's financial backing and produce a small series of the completed watch. This move carries on the reputation of Harry Winston as a patron of creative haute horlogerie; since 2001, the brand has debuted eight remarkable Opus watches, each the result of a collaboration with an outstanding independent watchmaker.
The Time Aeon Foundation was founded in 2008. The organization's goal is to ensure the continued well being of the horological crafts through the cultivation of new generations of Independent Master Watchmakers.
