Basel 2008: de Grisogono Meccanico dG Watch

de Grisogono has shown its fascinating Meccanico dG watch, which presents a revolutionary digital time display--one realized through mechanics, rather than electronics.  The de Grisogono Meccanico dG features a highly complex manually wound movement, which is comprised of 651 individual components. The watch displays two timezones, one analog and one with the digital display. In addition, the back of the movement incorporates a power reserve indicator.  The unprecedented digital display is realized by an extremely intricate system of cams and gear assemblies that manipulate mobile microsegments via a triggering and synchronization system.  These 2.90mm-long microsegments, which total 23 in all, have four faces, two of which are colored, and two which are unmarked. 90 degree rotations of these microsegments are responsible for time changes, and occur extremely rapidly.

Equally extraordinary is the visual power of the oversized 56 X 48mm cambered case. Available in titanium, titanium and red gold, titanium and rubber, or titanium and platinum, the Meccanico dG case features a large rubberized crown at 3 o'clock to control the analog display; two correctors placed on either sides of the case enable the setting of the digital hours and minutes.

Available in a limited edition of 177 pieces, the de Grisogono Meccanico dG timepiece is fitted with a strap in natural black rubber.
