In a press release by the Swatch Group, it has been announced that Blancpain SA has gained control of the Vica Sarl company, and with it the Vincent Calabrese watch brand.
Well known as the co-founder of the AHCI, (Horological Academy of Independent Creators), Vincent Calabrese has been a noted force in the world of innovative watchmaking, and is associated with many watch designs, some of which have been employed by noted watch companies. A famous example of this, would be the Corum Golden Bridge watch, which is based upon an original Vincent Calabrese watch whose gear train is suspended vertically on a single engraved gold bridge.
The involvement of Calabrese with the Blancpain can be traced back for some time, when Jacques Piguet, then the owner of Blancpain SA and the movement manufacturer Frederic Piguet requested that Calabrese construct a tourbillon for Blancpain, according to the concept of "Spatial watchmaking"--a theory which Calabrese followed to construct his very first flying tourbillon as an AHCI watchmaker. Most recently, Calabrese was involved in the creation of the innovative Blancpain Carrousel Volante Une Minute watch, which debuted at Baselworld 2008.
With the sale of Vica Sarl and the Vincent Calabrese watch brand to Blancpain, Calabrese will join Blancpain's Executive Management Board, under the leadership of Managing Director Marc A. Hayek. Calabrese will gain access to the considerable production resources of Blancpain to realize new horological projects, and Blancpain will benefit from Calabrese's talent and considerable experience in the field of complicated watchmaking.
