English sailor and three-time Olympic medalist Ben Ainslie will join Corum as a brand ambassador. Ainslie, who began sailing at the tender age of 8 and won his first World Championship at 16, has had a long appreciation for Corum watches, having acquired his first watch from the brand at 17 years of age.
Ainslie will be participating in the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games, where he will race the Men's single-handed heavyweight Finn, a craft which he has previously won five World Titles in. Over the past eight years, the accomplished sailor has amassed considerable experience in the America's Cup as well--following a stint with One World in 2000, he became the helmsman for Team New Zealand in 2004. Three years later he came on board with Team Origin, as skipper.
In addition to his impressive credentials on the water, Ainslie is highly appreciative of fine timepieces. His current favorite Corum watch is the brand's innovative Admiral's Cup Tides, whose combination of moonphase display and synchronized tidal and current indicators make it not only a superb example of prestige mechanical watchmaking, but an indispensible instrument for sailing.
The self-winding movement in this Corum timepiece--designated as the CO 277 Tides caliber--was the result of approximately three years of development between 1988 and 1991, and involved the assistance of the Geneva Astronomical University, and the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department of the French Navy
