SIHH 2009: IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater Watch

In 2009, Swiss watchmaker IWC  introduces a new variation of one of its most classically beautiful high complication watches--the Portuguese Minute Repeater.   Among other subtle changes, the revised IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater showcases a subsidiary seconds subdial that has been shifted from the 9 o'clock position to 6 o'clock, and an 18-karat gold or platinum case which measures 44mm--a diameter two millimeters greater than the previous model.  

Unaltered, is the stately elegance of the design, and the sublime mastery of its mechanical movement.  Visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback is the IWC Calibre 98950, a hand-wound movement that has  undergone subtle evolution since its first appearance in the 1920's.  Comprised of 205 individual components, including gilt-engraved bridges and plates in nickel silver, the Calibre 98950 incorporates signature features of the historical IWC Jones pocket-watch calibers; chief among these elements are a lengthy adjustment index, and a large diameter screw balance with a Breguet overcoil hairspringn and special adjustment cams.  The highly complex minute repeating mechanism activates upon request when the lever on the case is operated; it chimes the hours on a low note, quarter hours on alternating high-low notes, and individual minutes with individual high notes.  In the manner of all fine minute repeater movements, it features an all-or-nothing mechanism that precludes striking unless the slide is manipulated correctly.  The IWC Calibre 98950 has a classical balance frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour.  Power reserve is 46 hours.  

The new IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater watch will be produced in an edition of 500 pieces each in 5N 18-karat red gold and platinum.  Both versions of this complicated IWC classic display elegant silvered dials with applied Arabic numerals, polished leaf-shaped hands, and a railroad minute track.  Straps in hand-sewn alligator leather are fitted with IWC-signed folding buckles in 18-karat gold or platinum.
