Helsinki-based watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva has introduced a new timepiece, whose distinctive red gold moonphase indicator pays homage to both the fall season, and the expressive ethos of the watchmaker's native Finland. The Sarpaneva Korona K3 Red Moon Watch features a black DLC-treated 44mm stainless steel case, and a distinctively skeletonized dial design which grants a unique perspective on the moon's progress through its 29 1/2 day cycle. The red gold moonphase discs are elaborate and feature four levels of detail, necessitating more than two weeks of work by a specialist firm to complete. Sarpaneva has noted that the moon's slightly grim countenance--which he describes as "aristocratic melancholy"--is inspired by his perception of the Finnish mood. A sapphire exhibition back reveals a modified Soprod automatic movement, and a rotor whose "face" design matches the moonphase indicator. Power reserve is 42 hours.
Stepan Sarpaneva is the founder of Finland's sole watchmaking company, which he founded in 2003 after completing years of horological training in both Finland and Switzerland. During his time with some of the most prestigious Swiss watchmaking firms, which included Piaget, Parmigiani Fleurier, and the atelier of Christophe Claret, Sarpaneva was able to gain experience across a range of horological techniques, with an emphasis on specialized complications.
