On December 10th, a date marking the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin enjoyed the honor of organizing a performance of classical music at the behest of the Vatican and Pope Benedict XVI. The concert was held in the Paul VI Audience Hall, and attended by more than 7,000 guests, among them various international leaders and figures within the United Nations.
The Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt performed a diverse selection of works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Ponchielli and de Falla. Talented Spanish maestra Imma Shara, a Vacheron Constantin ambassador since 2007, conducted the orchestra. She also made history as the first woman to conduct a concert at the Vatican.
After the performance concluded, a ceremony took place to honor the considerable humanitarian achievements of Mr. Cornelio Sommaruga, a Swiss diplomat who presided over the International Committee of the Red Cross from 1987 to 1999. Sommaruga was presented with the 2008 Cardinal Van Thuam Prize, an award which recognizes notable achievements in the advancement of justice and world peace.
