The IWC Portuguese Automatic is an exciting watch which is emblematic of IWC’s accumulated watchmaking expertise. Already a tremendous success, the Portuguese Automatic showcases an exceptional movement manufactured by IWC, which has been engineered specifically to be showcased in the large case format which is a defining element of the Portuguese watches by IWC.
The movement of the IWC Portuguese Automatic has been completely designed, and produced, by IWC. The largest automatic-winding movement in current production, IWC’s caliber 51010 features an innovative bi-directional pawl-winding system, which was first developed by watchmaker and engineer Albert Pellaton. Perfected by IWC in this movement, it is efficient and winds the mainspring barrel quickly, to its full reserve of 7 days. Although it is actually capable of running longer, IWC limits the reserve to the point at which accurate timekeeping can no longer be guaranteed, due to diminished energy transfer from the mainspring to the gear train.
The IWC Portuguese Automatic is a striking design, with a 42.3mm case that successfully unites classicism and modernity. Its clean lines and perfect contrasting finishes match the clean expanses of the dial perfectly, which is noteworthy in itself, in that it maintains visual interest---showing seconds and power reserve---while remaining uncluttered and easily read. The elegant leaf hands and "railroad" minute track recall elements of classic pocket watch design. The IWC Portuguese Automatic is available in a steel with two dial choices, as well in 18K rose or white gold. A graphite colored dial is unique to the 18K white gold model, to distinguish it from its steel stablemate. In both spirit and substance, the IWC Portuguese Automatic is a watch which commands attention.
