The Glashutte Original Senator Calendar Week watch is a brilliant new addition to the distinguished Senator collection.
A creation of classical beauty and presence, this Glashutte Original timepiece provokes the eye and the intellect equally with its timeless aesthetics and superbly crafted manufacture movement, which illuminates the noble heritage of fine Saxon watchmaking. Measuring a pleasingly modern 40.1mm in diameter, the Glashutte Original Senator watch case displays a lustrous high polish and a beautifully subtle matte silvered dial. The dial radiates an understated elegance which emphasizes the unique numerical displays--to the left, the day of the week, to the right, the panorama date indicator, and proudly atop the dial, the calendar week in bold red. The gracefully faceted baton hands complement the design of the hour markers, and the tail of the seconds hand reveals another charming detail--a counterweight in the shape of the Glashutte Original symbol. A gently convex crystal spans the dial, merging seamlessly with the bezel contour; made from synthetic sapphire, it is nearly impervious to scratching.
Glashutte Original watches are famed for their exclusive, prestigious manufacture movements. The Senator Calendar Week timepiece follows in this noble tradition, and is fitted with the fine Caliber 100, a new construction that offers bi-directional winding, and a 55-hour power reserve. The variation inside this watch, dubbed the 100-05, is distinguished by its unprecedented combination of two dual-disc displays. The first, of course, is well known to Glashutte Original fans--the panorama date--an innovative large date display which features two concentric discs to create a gap-free, elegant date mechanism which offers instant switching. The second dual-disc display is the unusual calendar week display. Indicating the proper week throughout the year, this fascinating complication presented a considerable design challenge for the Glashutte engineers, due to the energy sapping switch that occurs between week 52 or 53 to week 1 of the next year.
The Glashutte Original watchmakers created a complex yet clever mechanism to handle this massive changeover, which relies on a dedicated spring barrel; this extra spring barrel stores the energy from the single steps each week to gradually accumulate enough tension so that the monumental year-end switch can happen without detrimentally affecting the energy store required by the other movement functions. Fully 71 jewels are required for this movement, more than any other of the Glashutte Original watches which utilize a Caliber 100 movement variant. Fine Glashutte decorative elements abound on the Caliber 100-05 movement, including shimmering stripe patterns on the bridges, a polished swan-neck fine adjustment, and a skeletonized rotor with a 21K gold segment. Thanks to a sapphire crystal caseback window, all of this fine workmanship may be fully admired.
The Glashutte Original Senator Calendar Week timepiece is available in both stainless steel and 18K rose gold. Both metals display the same dedicated attention to detail, and are fitted with silvered dials, and fine Louisiana alligator straps that close upon the wrist by means of an elegant steel or gold folding clasp.
