Watchmakers have observed that the rate of regularity of a mechanical watch is influenced by the effects of terrestrial gravity. So the principle of the Tourbillon is to house the watch regulation unit (the balance/balance spring/escapement assembly) in a cage turning on its own axis, generally at a rate of once a minute. This provides mixed vertical positions, ensuring a highly regular average rate and extreme accuracy, which makes the mechanism insensitive to the adverse effects of terrestrial gravity.

TheGirard-Perregaux Tourbillon is the expression of the tradition and expertise of the few watchmakers capable of performing by hand the multitude of finishing, decoration, assemby and setting operations on some 72 components for the cage of the Tourbillon with three gold Bridges, all within a diameter of one centimeter and weighing just 0.3 grams.
